Ron has been talking about Git for a while and I’ve been happily using Subversion and ignoring his zeal – bad idea on my part. I finally took a look at Git and was really impressed. The whole distributed version control thing just didn’t seem like that much bang for the buck somehow. After just half an hour using Git my thinking on the subject is completely changed. Wow! – it is just super easy to use and very, very fast. Branching and working off line are so optimized that the time cost of branching is nearly nil. I haven’t done extensive testing on a large repository – my next step – but I’m very encouraged by what I see with Git. Github.com offers a free repository for you to use to evaluate and test how git works. The syntax for all the commands is intuitive and the online documentation and tutorials are excellent if you want to dig deeper.
