Hi Doug,

I am the development leader for consumability within WebSphere. Your remarks certainly caught my eye and I want to thank you for them. We very much value the feedback that our customers bring, both good and bad, as that helps shape our direction. As Ryan noted, we have some very significant work under way for install and maintenance across the brand. If we can put a non disclosure letter in place, I would like to share that work with you for two reasons, 1) I would like your view on the work and 2) I think that it is a proof point for our commitment to get this area improved. I want this function to become so routine and robust that the topic is dropped from our future conversations. There is no business value in installing things... customer expectations demand that it just work! You can contact me at the enclosed email address.

sincerely,
Bob

Kind of you to reply. While your assertion that "IBM is trying" is heartening I gotta say that it is truly shocking what IBM is willing to make their customers endure.
I have no trouble believing that whatever generates the most trouble-tickets will get management attention but I've got to ask the question, "Where was management when this crap was being released?" So much of what we customers waste time configuring and managing is just slow, bloated, garbage engineering. While the installer may have improved - wouldn't you say that making it easy to get your software installed and running so your customers can use it quickly ought to be a 'no-brainer' - top of the priority list - kind of thing?

Hi Doug,

I am an application developer for IBM although not on any of these products. I just wanted to point out that you should continue to file support issues on these items that you found - all of them, including the file names screwiness you mentioned in your previous blog post.

Perhaps not surprisingly, IBM's technical decisions are greatly influenced by the number of support calls received on a particular topic. It's all tracked very closely and high level execs use it as a mechanism to tell teams they aren't working on the right thing.

Also, and I know this may seem like it's hard to believe, the install of IBM's products has improved dramatically over the past few years. It used to be a complicated several step process for each product. I know it's still frustrating, but believe me IBM is working on it and trying to improve it.

Sincerely,

Ryan

I was just now searching around about this when I discovered your post. I'm only visiting to say that I very much liked reading this post, it's really well written. Are you planning towrite more about this? It seems like there is more material here for later posts.
